During the Civil War 114 air-raid shelters were built around the city. Currently one of them can be visited that was found and refurbished during the renovation work on the Plaza Porticada and the Plaza del Príncipe.
When the war ended, the shelter was abandoned and little by little it was damaged by water and damp, until the fire that swept through Santander in 1941 ended by burying it and it was forgotten.
